MEL BIGGS is still on course for another singles title following another epic battle against Spencer Moulton’s Graham Shadwell in the men’s national singles championship on Monday at Chippenham Town.
Westlecot’s Biggs led fellow former England international Shadwell 9-5 at five ends, 11-8 at 15 and 16-10 at 20. However, Shadwell fought back to only be 19-16 down at 25 and 20-19 down on the 28th end.
But Biggs held his nerve to seal a 21-19 victory on the next with a single.
There was also a fine performance in the quarter-finals at Chippenham from Town Gardens’ Tom Pittuck who came frombehind to beat Steve Lynn (Wilton).
Pittuck was tied 5-5 at seven ends but had slipped 14-9 adrift at 14. But he rallied to restore parity 17-17 at 20 ends and 18-18 at 22 before collecting a big count of three on the next for a 21-18 win.
Holt duo Wayne Snook and Wayne Simmonds won the other two quarter-final ties. Snook was only tied 9-9 at 10 ends but then raced away to a 21-9 success over Gary Jackson (Westlecot).
Simmonds was only 7-6 up at 10 ends against Neil Smith (Wootton Bassett) but then led 20-8 at 16 and eventually won 21-13 after 20.
The semi-finals will be played at Swindon Westlecot on Sunday.
The men’s pairs championship saw the last 16 staged last Friday at Swindon and Chippenham Town (see results).
The quarter-finals (last eight) were due to be played last night at Holt with the four winners progressing to the semi-finals at Westlecot on Sunday afternoon.
