CRICKLADE’S Laura Halford got her Commonwealth Games off to an impressive start tonight with a silver medal as part of the Welsh team in the Rhythmic Gymnastics team all-around event.

The Welsh team finished second behind Canada at the Hydro in Glasgow, with Halford impressing in all four of her disciplines throughout the day.

Her displays were also enough for her to book her place in the individual all-around competition tomorrow, finishing fifth in the standings, giving her another chance to go for gold tomorrow afternoon.

Halford also secured her spot  in the individual finals for the ball, hoop and ribbon events on Saturday, although she did miss out on a place in the clubs final.

Her Esprit teammate, Steph Sherlock, was part of the English team which finished fourth in the team all-around event.

However, despite missing out on a medal herself, Sherlock will compete today in the individual all-around as well as the hoop and the ball on Saturday.
