SWINDON Supermarine will go into today’s friendly clash with Conference South side Basingstoke Town missing 10 players.

With Chris Taylor getting married today, captain Dave Bampton and Kyle Lapham will be with midfielder for his nuptials.

Manager Dave Webb will also be without the injured quartet of Mark Flanagan, Eddie Stevens, Sam Brown and Ryan O’Hara, while Sam Morris is unavailable as he is at a wedding, new winger Dan Drewitt is on holiday and Alex Stanley is working.

“All we can do is go out there and do what we can,” said Webb, who himself is away from Tuesday. “We have had a few players get more 90 minutes under their belts than I would have liked at this stage and that showed on Wednesday night when we drew with Wootton Bassett.

“We looked tired in the first half, but a change of formation saw us play a lot better.

“Against Bassett it was the first time I have had four defenders available to me and I played a tried and tested 4-4-2.

“But ironically we have looked better with just having three at the back this summer and that is what we went with in the second half.”

While Webb is still to find direct replacements for last season’s leading scorers, Ash Edenborough and Josh Parsons, the Marine chief says that Bradley Gray, Aaron Ferris, Ross Cooke and Joe Harris could combine in attack if needed.

Meanwhile, Fairford Town are facing a hectic few days, starting with a friendly with Western League Division One side Chippenham Park this afternoon.

Following today’s match, Gareth Davies’s side will then face Wantage Town on Monday evening in the Clanfield Cup, an 11-a-side summer tournament, before taking on Western League outfit Slimbridge 24 hours later.

“The good thing is that I’ll get to see and use all my players,” Davies said. “It will test us.

“But we are still not 100 per cent on what our starting XI will be this season.

“I know there are a couple of weeks before it all starts, but this period will help.”
