SWINDON’S finest young swimmers will be descending on Sheffield over the next fortnight as they compete at the British Gas ASA National Championship begin on Wednesday.

Both the Tigersharks and Dolphin will be represented in South Yorkshire in numerous events and age groups.

And one of Tigersharks’ most famous daughters, Jazz Carlin, has taken time out of her hectic schedule at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow to offer word of a encouragement to her clubmates Tivy Durrant and Luke Morgan as they prepare for the 14 and under 1,500m open water swim next Monday.

Tigersharks club coach Lesley Leffers said: “Both Luke and Tivy had been getting lots of encouragement from Jazz ahead of their events.

“They have been training really hard and I’d love for them to come home with a medal.”

But before Durrant and Morgan compete, Swindon Dolphin swimmers will be looking to make a splash at Ponds Forge.

On Wednesday, Sophie Barlett and Olivia Flack will be looking to make the evening finals in 11/12 age group with both competing in the 100m freestyle, while the latter will also be swimming in the 200m backstroke on the same day.

Thirteen-year-old William Davies will be looking to impress in his age group’s 1,500m on Thursday before going in the boys under 13 400m freestyle on Sunday.

Flack will return to the pool over the weekend in the 100m backstroke on the Saturday and the 400m freestyle 24 hours later, while Beth Crouch will take to the open water on Sunday in 17/18 3km race.

Swindon Dolphin will have six swimmers at Sheffield for the second week of competition as the older age groups take centre stage.

Rebecca Flack and Charlotte Gardo will be swimming in the 50m breaststroke in their respective 15/16 and 17/18 age groups on Wednesday, August 6.

Charlotte Pitts will be in action on the same day as he competes in the 17/18 800m freestyle.

James Clark, Lauren Matthews and Mathew Sambrook will be in action on the Friday in the 100m freestyle, 200m butterfly and 1,500m free respectively, while Pitts and Clark will be in action on on the Sunday.

Dolphin chief coach Louise Clayton said: “We’ve had a fantastic year and it is great that we’ve got so many swimmers in Sheffield. For many of them it will be their first national championships, all of our swimmers have competed in Sheffield before.

“Everyone has been training very hard for this and we just want them to perform to their best of their abilities - if they can pick up any medals along the way that will be a bonus.”
