SWINDON Supermarine chief Dave Webb expects his side’s character to come to the fore as they look to exorcise the demons of their midweek shocker at AFC Totton.

Marine have been left licking their wounds after they slipped to a crushing 6-1 defeat in Hampshire on Tuesday night but with a Bank Holiday double-header looming, manager Webb says that it’s all hands to the pump as the Webb’s Wood men look to get straight back on track.

The Marine chief doesn’t expect his team to allow themselves to slip into a downward spiral and with a home clash against Taunton Town on Saturday and a trip to near-neighbours Wantage Town on Monday (kick-off 3pm) on the menu, the opportunity is there for the South Marston side to rejuvenate their fortunes.

“Tuesday wasn’t what we expected after a really positive second-half performance against a good Shortwood United side on the weekend – we were disappointed and shell-shocked,” said Webb.

“The game was over after we conceded three goals in eight minutes. One of our aims this season was to set the team up to keep clean sheets and we haven’t managed to do that yet.

“But we’ve got to all stick together now. I’ve got too much in my dressing room at Swindon Supermarine for that not to happen.

“We’ve got a few young players in the squad but we’ve also got a lot of experience and it’s up to those players to help the youngsters come through this.

“The stats are there for everyone to see – we’ve played four games and won one of them and after two successful seasons, we can’t allow ourselves to fall away now.

“We’ve got two games this weekend and they’ll be tests. When you’re winning games, every match feels easy but they become difficult when you haven’t been winning.”

Marine have been boosted by the news that full-back Mark Flanagan is nearing a return to full-fitness while Webb revealed that he is chasing two potential new recruits.

The Webb’s Wood boss is aiming to bring in a defender on loan from Basingtoke Town and is also chasing the signature of a midfielder.

Striker Brad Gray is unavailable for Saturday’s clash with Taunton but returns for Monday’s trip to Wantage.
