Town boss looking to boost his numbers before the weekend

TOWN boss Mark Cooper will be stepping up his recruitment drive ahead of the weekend’s fixture with Coventry.

With injuries potentially ruling out Michael Smith and George Barker, as well Nathan Thompson set to serve a one-match suspension, Swindon’s squad is thin on the ground.

Cooper’s faith in his youngsters has been well documented and so far proven to be largely successful. However after Tuesday’s game he admitted that chairman Lee Power and himself will have to increase the numbers they were trying to get in door for the Coventry clash.

Asked whether he had plans to bring players in for the game he said: “We were trying to do that anyway, we’re hoping to that we will have - well it was two – we’re hoping it be a few more now. It is what it is, we’re not going to bleat about, we’re going to get on with it.

"We had Michael Smith playing with one arm, George Barker with one arm, Ben Gladwin could have broken his ankle. So we were playing with nine-and-a-half men in the end. I can’t see any of them being fit for Saturday.”

If the club are unable to get their targets in before Saturday Cooper has no qualms using the youngsters he has already shown faith in this season.

“We’ve got faith in our young players and if we have to play the young players then we will play them,” he added.

If jack Stevens doesn't come, I wonder if the Brighton player Dunk would be available. Looked very impressive and probably kept them in the cup with some of his clearances. I know we were after loaning him last season, but missed out to City I believe.

Not sure if he is now a regular first team player for Brighton, but if he isn't he would be a great signing for us.

As soon as the transfer window shuts what is the betting that the Adver headlines will read...''Cooper frustrated at no additions to already thread bare squad!''. Same old story and people/the club wonder why attendances are slumping to the lowest in years. Why do we take forever to sign players and leave it to the last minute?, especially when they are only kids on loan!. We should of sorted out our squad before a ball was kicked. In my opinion, the best thing Power could do is put the club up for sale. We go from one unambitious skint cowboy to the next.

Oh dear, who moved the rock...

Like I said before, it doesn't matter to you because by your admission, you won't go to the matches to support the club or team. There may be players coming in, there may not be, but as you'll never see them play, preferring to whinge from behind your computer, why do you care?

"...the best thing Power could do is put the club up for sale." You volunteering to buy and pump millions of your own cash in? Thought not. If all football supporters took your stance, we wouldn't have a club at all.

Just read the email newsletter I alwatys get from the official site, the billing for the weekend sounds like a film review - there're a whole list of quotes from opposition managers as to how difficult they think we are to play against. Never seen that before, sounded a bit laughable to be honest but then I clearly don't understand marketing.

* as well Nathan Thompson set to serve a one-match suspension
*increase the numbers they were trying to get in door for the Coventry clash
*we’re hoping to that we will have - well it was two – we’re hoping it be a few more now

An error in one of the other sport articles today too, shocking!

I dont think you get more of a real football person than Lee Power, the money is the issue, but our wage bill has been slashed, catering deals have tupeed the staff accross so admin costs are down, yet we are not paying the police and local businesses what we owe them....

But we are where we are......and on top of that the gates are dropping and certainly are considerably down on last year, I need to win the Euro millions to help the club out....

Why dont you go down to the County Ground and watch our exciting young side you never know you might be pleasantly surprised. Admittedly we are 3 or 4 players short of a very good squad but Premiership teams are very reluctant to let players go until the last minute when they have to name their 25 man squad. I personally would rather see young hungry players looking to make a name in the game than has been journeymen who are looking for one last pay day.
In terms of the owner everyone knows he is not a super rich man and I dont think there is a queue of foreign billionaires at the back of the North Stand
ready to buy him out but what he does have is a good knowledge of football with plenty of contacts , we just need the locals to comeback and support the club and watch some of the best football served up their for many years.

I'll explain why I take that view.

There is no rich benefactor in the wings waiting to buy the club. In any event once they tire of their train set people like that can be here today and gone tomorrow, leaving chaos in their wake for others to clear up. Clubs in that position can be hostages to fortune.

We are lucky to have a League 1 side to support. Count the ex League teams in the Conference, it's about half. There are more in Conference North. Life in the lower leagues is tough and precarious.

Some contributors on here need to start living in the real world.

Also it makes me laugh how people can complain about lack of funds and then say they refuse to go to matches in the same breath. Have they really not spotted the flaw there..?

I don't recall commenting on the Middle East. As for 'we are where we are' isn't that pretty much what I was saying?

I commented as I did because I think it's absurd to think that some rich buyer will appear out of nowhere.

That said, I shouldn't have called him an idiot. I shall apologise.

I can except that because I love watching the club, but the away support is dropping and the home gates are down, Apathy is a word I would use to describe my STFC fan friends...... Most of them have stopped going because they don't enjoy keepball football in our own half, thats fact, but I have a ST and will attend all of the home games but I stopped going away after Shrewsbury last year which was the worst performance I have ever seen.

You make it out to be a straight choice between Premier League hopefuls/cast-offs and old pros looking for an easy ticket. It's not though, is it? What about trying to sign some up and coming players from the lower divisions or below? Or even proven professionals from that level, with plenty of years left in them? You admit we're 3 or 4 players short. If all we ever do is plug the gaps with loan players, we're always going to be 3 or 4 players short. We're not trying to compete in the Premier League so why do we have this obsession with Premier League players?

The club boasts about its reputation for good football. All well and good but to increase its standing in the eyes of lapsed or potential fans it needs to appeal to their gut instincts. Getting fans through the turnstiles and money in the coffers is more important than gathering compliments from other clubs.

In my opinion, the best thing Power could do is put the club up for sale. We go from one unambitious skint cowboy to the next.
Has ANYONE thought why the attendance might be down as a lot of people just don't have the spare cash these days..

Also people who have been attending for years have decided not to go as all they see and read about all simmer was the court case...
I know a lot of people who don't go anymore for the plain ans simple fact is that they don't trust Power just the same as all posters on here thought when he came here..
PLUS ALL THE CUTBACKS apart from how much it cost on march day.

TRUST is a big thing in life and people don't trust L Power..
ALSO believe it or not they also hate the football we play

Reading some of the above posts , its quite clear frustrations are beginning to boil over , as Saturday looms larger , yet still no new additions - I really hope we can get in one or two bodies in- not just to give the squad much needed depth - but to settle one or two down , and save them from a possible Cardiac.

Very sad that we see fans on here believing we should invest rather than build a young base, Football is changing in England (too late ?) but STFC have moved down that route and are looking to invest in young players rather than died in the hole journeymen.

Is this that right move ?

Having seen a once top Premier League team full of internationals struggle with a new format I would say we have made the correct decision.

Boring ?

Rather watch us with 33% possession hitting a long ball in the hope it may break for us ?

Hi Mother, I will award you WUM of the month, Congratulations but get your kicks elsewhere.

Don't post much these days as frustrated by the constant knocking back.wards and fault finding. There are certain posters on here that will find a negative regardless of the performance.

Don't know, but really suspect this season is a find stability season after the court case etc. If you don't want to go and watch what appears to be a talented group of kids then don't but don't come on here and gloat that the crowds are down. Instead if you are a true fan get your Rss down to the CG and support the club you say you support. Yes it costs but so do the players you desparately want the club to fund.

What like Kasim, Branco, Gladwin we are doing that as well as taking loans from Prem teams of which we have the massive amount of 2. All I keep hearing is I don't trust Lee Power or the football is boring or we have not signed anyone for money, I don't know why people just can't sit back and enjoy how good the football our young team has been playing so far. I am pretty sure we will have at least 3 in before the end of deadline day and then the loan window starts 2 weeks after that. Anyone would think we are bottom of the league shipping goals being played off the park with the moaning that is going on.

Oxon, that tirade shows your frustration very clearly. It's understandable and I wouldn't criticise you for it. I'm not sure about the gloating though.

In any case, don't you think we should all be giving some thought to why attendances are down? I know several people who stopped going last season for two reasons - they were bored with the football and they were disappointed that the club was relying so heavily on loans. The football so far this season, although scintillating at times, has largely carried on where it left off and the recruitment policy is the same. There may be strong arguments in favour of both but I'm afraid many people see it as stagnation - a sense that image is more important than progress. Unless the formula starts producing consistently good results, we are all going to have to get used to lower attendances.

I'd just add that I thought we added a new dimension to our game on Tuesday. We moved the ball around quicker than we have before under this chairman and manager. Many of the stayaways would have appreciated it. If we keep it up, some will come back. I would certainly do my bit to try to persuade them anyway.
