MARK Cooper is hoping that the Swindon Town fans will be relishing Jon Obika’s home debut tonight.

The former County Ground loanee marked his return to the Robins squad with a stunning two-goal bow in Saturday’s 2-1 success at Bradford City.

The 24-year-old, whose first spell at the County Ground in 2011 was a fruitless one, has already started to silence the doubters who questioned his return.

On Saturday, the travelling support were chanting ‘super Jon Obika’ by half-time and as he prepares for his home debut against Oldham, Cooper is hopeful that there will more of the same.

“Hopefully they (the fans) will be really excited (about Obika’s home debut),” the Town chief told the Advertiser.

“Hopefully they will turn up on Tuesday night and he’ll score a couple of goals for them.”

The Swindon boss also said that there are no concerns over Obika’s strike partner Michael Smith despite the former Charlton man’s lean spell.

After netting four goals in the opening two matches, the 23-year-old has not scored since, but Cooper is confident that he will.

“I thought that he (Smith) played well against Bradford, he had a couple of chances – he will score,” the Swindon boss said.

“That is part of being a striker, there are spells where you don’t score – he will come good.

“He wants to play every game and work hard for the team and he knows that if we keep playing like we are he is going to get opportunities to score.”

With Obika now at the club the Town chief is pleased with the forward options at his disposal.

“Obviously Jon has just come in and it is good start for him. Andy Williams seems to score goals in runs, we have got three or four good strikers who can play.

“It is important that they all play and they know that are part of it and they are going to have opportunities to play.

“I think we look at individual games and try and decide which partnership will work against different teams.”

Now with his new look strike force, Cooper is looking to avenge last season’s pair of defeats to the Latics, who beat Town 1-0 at the County Ground in February and 2-1 at Boundary Park last October.

It won’t be an easy task for Town, with Lee Johnson’s men having only lost once on the road – 1-0 reverse to Preston on August 23, since their 2-1 defeat to MK Dons on February 15.

“They did the double on us last year so we certainly owe them one,” Cooper said.

“They are hard working team, they’ve got some good players and they will try to play football – I’m looking forward to it is should be a good game.

“I think he (Lee Johnson) has done great, he won’t have a fantastic budget I wouldn’t have thought. He has kept Oldham up last year comfortably and they have had a decent start this year.”
