AARON Nell wants Swindon Wildcats to build on their stunning opening two games of the season when they face Guildford Flames in a league and cup double-header this weekend.

The Link Centre side entertain the Surrey men tomorrow in a match that will have both points for the EPL and Challenge Cup on offer.

And then 24 hours later the two sides do it all again - this time at the Guildford Spectrum.

“It is going to be a tough weekend,” Nell told the Advertiser. “Guildford have got a very strong line-up this year.

“They haven’t gone out and replaced players - they have added to what they already had and they are very, very good.

“But we tend to do well against them at home - we always seem to raise our game and we are confident that we can get something out of this.”

With the Flames double-header being for both league and cup points, Nell knows the importance at what is at stake.

“At the start of the season the cup is something that we targeted,” he said. “We want to get beyond the group stages, into the semi-finals and hopefully finals - that was one of our goals.”

Having come through the opening weekend of the season with a routine 4-1 success over Chelmsford Chieftains on the Saturday, Cats sent out a message to the rest of the EPL with a penalty shootout success against last year’s champions Manchester Phoenix.

“On Saturday night it was quite tough, they were a team from a league below and they made it very difficult for us,” the 28-year-old forward said.

“It was a bit like football, like Barcelona playing a team from a lower division, they just really shut things down and we couldn’t get any flow to the game.

“On Sunday, we were excellent. We wanted to get off to a good start in the league and that is what we did.”

The former Sheffield Steelers man believes that the new imports of Kenton Smith and Tomasz Malasinski have already fitted in well.

“Kenton has got a great resume and is used to playing at this level and above,” Nell added. “Tomasz, played well on Saturday, but on Sunday he was excellent.

“I know some fans will be looking to compare him to Jonas (Hoog), but they are very different players.

“Tomasz does a lot of work off the puck that might go unnoticed, but he is a very talented player.”
