TOWN boss Mark Cooper was happy with the response of his players to their disappointing stalemate on Tuesday night against Oldham, as they scored five goals to end Sheffield United’s seven-game unbeaten streak.

Swindon dominated Nigel Clough’s Blades for 75 minutes of the game. Though for a quarter of an hour spell the Robins did wobble, conceding two goals in quick succession, before roaring back with another pair of strikes to seal a significant win.

The fluency and bravery of Cooper’s side returned to resign the Oldham game to a blot on the performance chart. Town passed one of League One’s serious big boys to pieces. By the end the Blades looked like a weary drunk with their thumb out hoping for taxi home.

Cooper was clearly delighted with the performance, demonstrating the hard work his side had put in during training to prepare for the game.

“I think the response is that we’ve gone away and looked at what we did wrong and tried to put it right. Today we looked as though we did,” Cooper told the Advertiser.

“You can see what we worked on Thursday and Friday in terms of how we want to get out. We didn’t kick the ball long and tried to work the ball out from the back and play through their midfield and that’s how we ended up creating chances.

“Once you break through the first press you have to then accelerate and try and finish the movement which is what we did. The midfield boys broke with great pace today, Massimo and Louis, that gave us the opportunity to create chances.”

However the shaky period prompted by Marc McNulty’s soft goal meant that the County Ground chief could not head home knowing his side had put in a complete performance. Cooper was quick to note his side’s deficiencies.

“We got to 3-0 up which was fantastic and then it gets a little bit rocky. We let them back in at 3-2, after what happened to them at Colchester, being two down and coming back to win 3-2, you're thinking the worst could happen,” he added.

“As well as we played we could be sat here maybe with a point because we’ve not defended properly at 3-0 up. That's something that needs to be addressed.

“I keep saying they're young players and they're learning. They have to learn today when they’re 3-0 it’s not about going to get four or five, it’s making sure we don’t concede.”
