JUSTIN Edinburgh believes Newport County’s Johnstone’s Pain Trophy tie with Swindon presents a genuine opportunity for his side to reach the second round.

Newport are currently mid-table in League Two but are on a five-game unbeaten run, mostly thanks to a their ability to draw and a defence conceding less than a goal-a-game in that time.

Goals have been an issue for the Exiles so far this season. Former Swindon youth product Chris Zebroski is their top scorer with two goals as Newport have only found the net on nine occasions in total.

However Edinburgh will not let that record or the 36 place football league ladder difference dent his side’s confidence.

“It is a realistic chance for us to progress in the tournament and Wembley is at the end of it so it’s as high up there as any other competition in our list of priorities,” said the Rodney Parade chief.

“We’re on a real good run and we want to continue that.

“Credit to the players, they continue to progress as a group and they feel and I feel that there is still more to come.

“There will be changes. People have been patient and certainly with the effort we’ve put in to those two away games one or two are going to need a rest.”
