SUPERMARINE boss Dave Webb has called on his more senior players to stand up and be counted after he watched his side crash out of the FA Trophy in a game they dominated.

The home side let a second half lead slip as they succumbed to a last gasp goal which sent Fleet Town home with a 2-1 win and a place in the next round of the competition.

After Chris Taylor gave Supermarine the lead shortly after the re-start from the penalty spot it looked like they would go on and win the game but late goals from Simba Mlambo and Robb Carr turned the tie on its head.

“I don’t think I have ever been involved in anything like that before, even as a player,” said Webb, who saw his side play some of the best football he has seen them play for large periods of the game.

“We absolutely murdered them for 35 minutes but haven’t scored, they get a bit more confidence, then we do score, we get in front, and then we transpired to give two absolutely awful goals away.

“If we played that game 10 times it would probably transpire that we would win nine but today we have lost to a team that we should be beating in what is a very important game for the football club.

“At 1-0, with the players we have got on the pitch, we should have enough savvy to see a game through, if you win a game 1-0, it could have been five or six, you’re in the next round.

“It isn’t like I have got a team there with 11 20-year-olds in it, there’s a lot of experience in that team that need to stand up and be counted.”

Ryan Pryce, in the Fleet Town goal, was the busier of the two keepers in the first period.

Ryan Stanners was the first to test the visitor’s keeper after just seven minutes, before Josh Morse got on the end of a cross from Ryan O’Hara which was well stopped.

With the hosts failing to find the net Fleet were allowed to come back into the game and Sam Warrell was forced into a good save with his feet from a shot by Ben White.

Supermarine continued to push for an opener in the second half and there was an early warning for the visitors when Taylor saw his effort from outside the box strike the wood work and bounced the wrong side of the goal line.

A minute later, Taylor was again causing trouble as he was found in the box and his shot was blocked by Warren Gibson’s leg before bouncing and striking the defenders arm.

Taylor stepped up to take the resulting penalty and neatly rolled the ball in along the floor, sending the keeper the wrong way.

For all of Supermarine’s dominance they could not find a second, and on 70 minutes Mlambo was able to tap home a goal mouth scramble after White had been found in acres of space in the box from a free-kick conceded by Ross Adams.

The knock-out blow for Marine came on 89 minutes when Carr found himself on the end of a cross from Ben White to complete the smash and grab victory.
