HIGHWORTH Town manager John Fisher is taking comfort in the fact that his side will be bidding for £1,200 worth of prize money and a place in the third round proper of the FA Vase on a Saturday.

The Highworth boss has been unable to ascertain why his team have only managed to win once in midweek so far this season, with the Worthians slipping up again on Tuesday night as they went down 1-0 at the hands of Ardley United.

But this weekend, the second round of the Vase sees the Elms men renew hostilities with Western League Bridport, who they beat 3-2 in extra-preliminary round of the FA Cup back in August, and Fisher is delighted that it’s all happening on a Saturday.

“I can’t put my finger on what it is. When we met up on Tuesday, I said ‘boys, it’s midweek so I don’t know what you’re going to give me’,” said the Highworth chief.

“We just always seem to lose in midweek. You can just never prepare for what a player’s going to give you. You don’t know if they’ve had a bad day at work.

“On a weekend, we seem to get it right. But the only worry is that if we draw, we’ve got to go all the way to Bridport on a Tuesday.

“You can apply for dispensation to try and get it played the following weekend and we tried that but the FA said no.

“We did beat them before and if my lads are on their game, we can go through – but we have to be on our game.”
