A HIGH-QUALITY field has been assembled to contest this year’s annual Westlecot Indoor Open Singles Tournament which again forms part of the national planetbowls.com tour.

It will be held at the Old Town Club on the weekend of December 13-14 and will be limited to a field of 64 players.

A top prize of £1000 will be on offer to the winner and £500 to the runner-up in a prize pot of over £2200.

This year’s tournament has attracted world ranked players including number two Robert Paxton (Taunton), number 14 Mark Royal (Mid-Suffolk) and number 20 Danny Denison (Torquay United) as well as Westlecot’s own Neil Smith.

The draw for the 2014 Westlecot Open Singles has been made and can be viewed on the planet.bowls.com website with two blank spaces to be filled by two Westlecot qualifiers.

A qualifying tournament for those two places will be run over the next couple of weeks with 16 entrants and will be played down to the last two.

n KATY Smith was pipped at the post in the 2014/15 Area 10 final of the Champion of Champions national championships and just missed-out on claiming a last 32 spot in the event.

The 17-year-old Westlecot Ladies singles champion was beaten 21-20 by Gill Fry (Gloucester), the Area 10 defending champion and a beaten quarter-finallist in last year’s competition.

Katy’s father Neil was hoping for better fortunes last night as he was due to face Ryan Atkins (Malvern Hills) in the men’s champion of champions Area 10 final in Worcestershire.
