WESTLECOT Ladies have reached the third round of the Yetton Plate.

They booked their place against Bromsgrove on January 10 with a comprehensive 99-66 victory over Fairford.

However, the match was extremely close in the first half. with Westlecot 20-18 up across the board after five ends but Fairford had hit back to lead by five shots 43-38 after 11 ends.

The Old Town club then struck back superbly in the next four ends to move 70-53 ahead at 15, extending their advantage to 80-60 at 18 and finally running out 33 shot winners.

Westlecot eventually took the honours on all four rinks but were made to fight hard in the early stages.

Wendy Anderson’s quartet came back from 12-8 down at 11 ends and 13-11 at 13 to win the last eight and claim a 28-13 success while Rosemary Nichols trailed 11-8 at 11 ends but moved 17-11 clear at 13 and went on to win 28-17.

Away in Fairford, Janet Willis’ rink were tied 7-7 at six ends and 12-12 at 12 but then a hotshot (maximum count of eight) on the next set the foursome on the way to a 25-20 success. Alongside, Linda Perfitt’s quartet were involved in a tight match throughout, losing 4-3 at five ends but winning 10-9 at 11 before finally edging home by two shots.

  • WESTLECOT men claimed a 115-56 Wessex League victory over local rivals Swindon Manor.

The Old Town club laid the foundations for the big win in the opening ten ends as they led 30-8 across the board after five and 62-24 after ten. They just continued to power away to the 115-55 win.

The home rink, skipped by Dave Godwin, was in total control, winning 35-4 while close on their heels was the away foursome led by Tom Walkley, who recorded a 33-11 success.

The victory and 16 points gets Westlecot back on track after their defeat by Loddon Vale and moves them into third spot in the East region table, three points behind Carterton, who have played one more match, and 23 behind unbeaten leaders West Berks.

The loss leaves newcomers Swindon Manor languishing at the foot of the table and still seeking their first league victory after three defeats.

  • WILTSHIRE men were beaten 111-102 by Hampshire in their opening Liberty Trophy tie.

Wiltshire trailed by between 15 and 20 shots for most of the game but a spirited second-half saw them cut the gap at one stage to just three shots. However, they eventually lost by nine.

They took the honours on two of the six rinks and drew on another with skips Andy Moore and Neil Smith successful while Dave Snell had to settle for a draw.
