THE feeling of winning a gold medal at a major tournament is still sinking in for Callum Buglass, a week after the achievement.

One year after being relegated due to using an ineligible player, Great Britain’s U20 national team topped the Division 2A in Estonia with a perfect record.

GB opened their campaign in Tallinn with a 4-2 win over the Netherlands before claiming wins over Lithuania, Romania and a shootout success against Korea secured them topping the group.

Having already won the group, and gained promotion, GB then beat the hosts Estonia 3-1 in their final match.

“It was an unbelievable experience, I don’t think it has sunk in just yet,” said Buglass. “We knew we could do it but when you get handed the medal it becomes real.

“We had a great group of guys who went over there and we had a goal of what we wanted to achieve and we did that.

“I was pretty confident going into the first game. We had a great team and knew each other’s capabilities, but the first one is always tough because you go in blind.

“We didn’t know what Holland were going to be like, but we knew we had to win that game to start the tournament off the right way.”

The 18-year-old D-man was joined by Floyd Taylor and Ollie Betteridge as well as Okanagan Hockey Academy players Toms Rutkis, Glen Billing, Luc Johnson, Ben Nethersell and Michael Stratford, all played a part as they claimed gold at the Under 20 World Championships.

Betteridge got his name on the score-sheet in the third win over Romania.

The young forward was assisted by Taylor in the 5-2 win and Buglass has said that those memories will stay with the players for a long time.

“We’ll share the same memories forever now, all three of us were there on the trip and the OHA boys as well, just to say we got the gold medal and we did it with each other is wicked,” said Buglass.

“It was every emotion possible. There was happiness and it seemed surreal, we didn’t believe we had it.”
