JONI Warner’s inspired display helped Wootton Bassett Ladies to their third win on the bounce, a 2-0 success at Bristol and West lifting them to fourth in Gloucestershire Women's League Division 1.

Warner, who re-joined the club in November for three months before returning to coach soccer in the United States, marshalled the midfield well and helped create chance after chance, but the Bristol and West defence stood strong and Bassett could not find a way through in the first half.

Bassett again came out strong from the restart and their patience and possession finally paid off just before the hour. A perfect cross from Megan Tidy on the right found Kelli Oakes in the box and she laid the ball into the path of Amber Egerton, who calmly slotted past the keeper to score her first of the season.

Warner's impressive performance in her last match for Bassett this season was capped off by a sweetly-struck shot from outside the box to double Bassett's lead.

Strong defending from the Bassett back-line and stand-in keeper Laura Gammon sealed the win in an excellent all-round team performance.

Warner was delighted to end her spell at the club on a high and said: "What a great end to my season with Wootton Bassett Ladies.

“Winning 2-0 and finally getting a goal. It's been an awesome three months with these girls, they’re always so welcoming.

“It is my first ever football club and it will definitely be my last, I can't wait to come back again in November."

Frome Town Ladies held visiting Swindon Spitfires to a 1-1 draw but the away side were unlucky not to come away with more than a point.

Spitfires started strongly, with Katie Wadey’s pressure on the Frome keeper resulting in a clearance that hit the striker and bobbled goalwards but a divot took the ball away from goal at the last moment.

In the 17th minute Wadey thought she had scored but the goal was disallowed for an earlier foul as Spits continued to push.

On the half-hour Wadey turned provider as she played the ball through to Beth Turner, who beat the keeper to the ball and scored.

That remained the score into the second half despite Wadey having a number of opportunities.

Frome’s equaliser came from a long punt over the top, with their striker latching onto it to make it 1-1.

Chances at either end came and went but that was it for goals as the game finished all square.

Sptfires Development also managed a draw in their fixture, a 1-1 affair with Marlborough Town Ladies There were end-to-end chances in the first half, which required some fantastic saves from both goalkeepers, Sophie Kirby (Spitfires) and Robyn Hill (Marlborough), and the score remained 0-0 until the interval.

It was Marlborough who were to break the deadlock as a first lack of concentration for the Spitfires defence allowed Marlborough's Kirsty Miles to finish.

Spitfires provided attack after attack but were not rewarded until late on when a goalmouth scramble led to a Marlborough defender handling on the line and Victoria Parry stepped up to blast the penalty past Hill.

Spitfires pushed for the winner and created a number of good chances to take three points but ultimately had to settle for the draw.

Highworth Town took no prisoners as they beat Market Lavington 11-1 at home.

Lavington started well from the off but after Mariana Claus found the net on 13 minutes there was no stopping Highworth.

By the full-time whistle came around, Town’s Kerry Walkett, Hannah Dagliesh, Sadie Harrison, Alex Baker, Pam Harris and Hannah Luker had all found the net.

Many of the women’s and girls’ football games last weekend began with tributes to to celebrate the life of football-mad Rhiannon Brown, the 15-year-old Swindon Town player who was part of the Swindon Town Football in the Community development program, who sadly passed away on Wednesday evening.

Rhiannon was very well known to those who play football in Wiltshire and Adam Wood, manager of Swindon Spitfires Development, paid tribute to her.

"This weekend has been an emotionally hard weekend for all involved in football in Swindon, with the sad news regarding Rhiannon Brown who I knew on a personal level and worked with her mother,” he said.

“My under 16s (some of which were in Rhiannon's year at school) and the ladies who knew her were incredibly brave for playing over the weekend and I would like to thank Bath and Marlborough for agreeing to do the one minute’s applause.

“Rhiannon was a lovely, football-mad girl with huge potential and I hope we all did her proud as I know a lot of players dedicated their performances to her.

“The thoughts of those at Swindon Spitfires are with Caroline and Darcy at this tremendously difficult time.”
