JAZZ Carlin made the biggest splash at the Swindon Advertiser Sports Awards last night as she claimed two gongs.

The former Tigersharks swimmer picked up the Sportswoman of the Year award along with the Performance of the Year award for her exploits in the Commonwealth Games.

Carlin enjoyed an exceptional 2014 in the pool, picking up medals in three major competitions around the world.

The 24-year-old became the first Welshwoman to win Commonwealth Games gold when she claimed the 800m freestyle title in Glasgow in July.

She followed that up with silver over 400m before triumphing in both events at the European Championships in Berlin just a fortnight later.

Carlin was not able to attend last night’s ceremony, with the award being picked up on her behalf.

Swindon Town midfielder Massimo Luongo, who is currently impressing for Australia in the Asian Cup, where has already picked up two man of the match awards ahead of Saturday’s final, scooped the Sportsman of the Year award for his outstanding season at the County Ground.

Luongo also went to the World Cip with the Socceroos and his performances at the heart of the Town midfield have helped the side claim top spot in the League One table.

It was a special night for the swimming community in Swindon at the Hilton as Swindon Dolphin also picked up two awards.

Swindon Dolphin picked up the Team of the Year crown after their 14-12 victory over Exeter II secured them a first Bristol and West Water Polo League Division One Championship.

The Milton Road-based club also retained their Young Sports Team of the Year award.

Dolphin ended 2014 in style when they won the Arena League Western Division One title to secure promotion to the Premier Division.

Chris and Bev Maull were given special recognition with the Lifetime Achievement award.

The husband and wife team were presented with the award for their long-running services to the Spitfires, who are one of the oldest female football clubs in the country.

TrustSTFC chairman Steve Mytton walked away with the Sports Personality of the Year award beating off strong competition from Swindon Robins’ team boss Alun Rossiter, boxing trainer Paddy Fitzpatrick and Laura Halford.

Martin Hutchison was given the Coach of the Year award after leading his Croft Red age group to two successive league and cup doubles in the North Wilts Youth Football League.

In the Young Sportsman of the Year category 12-year-old Miles Ody fought off the competition after achieving a second degree black belt as well as two gold medals in 2014.

While in the Young Sportswoman of the Year award 14-year-old Chloe Crippen raced to the gong after claiming the Swindon School’s Cross-Country Championships as well as claiming her first district title.

In the final award, Ian Sharpe claimed the Unsung Hero crown. The current chairman at White Horse Cricket Club has been involved with the club since their inception in the early 1980s and remains as the club captain.
