STEVIE Whitfield has set his sights on silverware after becoming the latest player to agree a new contract with Swindon Wildcats.

On Tuesday it was confirmed that Aaron Nell would also be extending his stay at the Link Centre into the 2015-16 season, just a week after the announcement that netminder Stevie Lyle will be taking over from current boss Ryan Aldridge in a player-coach role at the end of this campaign.

Cats have steadily improved in the English Premier League over the past few seasons and earlier this month competed in the Challenge Cup semi-finals.

Whitfield says the hunger to bring a long-awaited trophy to Swindon meant there was no doubt where he wanted to be playing next term.

“I’m very pleased to be staying,” said 24-year-old Whitfield.

“I always get surprised how early they ask me to come in but when Steve (Nell, general manager) asked me to come in I was really happy that was what he wanted to do. It was a very easy decision to make.

“Any of my expectations and goals are tied up with this club. I don’t want to just win a trophy, I want to win a trophy with Swindon. It was very easy to re-sign and keep building towards that.

“Over the four years I’ve been here we’ve improved every year.

“That’s something I think we’ll continue to carry on doing and the decision to keep Stevie here coaching is a good one.

“The way the club is set up, the infrastructure is building towards increasing our league position and getting better and better.”

D-man Whitfield has come through the ranks at the club and the current season is his tenth with the Cats, making him a key figure in the locker room at the Link Centre.

“I’ve got a lot of experience playing hockey in Swindon,” added Whitfield.

“There’s obviously guys who have come in who are a bit older and have played at other places, but I know what it means to the town and the club when we do well.

“Hopefully I am able to use that when I can.”
