CLUB hero Charlie Griffin is returning to Chippenham Town for a third spell after agreeing a move back to Hardenhuish Park.

The much-travelled Griffin, a prolific scorer during the club's years in the Western League in the late 1990s, could go straight into the squad for tomorrow's Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Division clash against Hitchin Town tomorrow (3pm).

The 35 year old frontman, who lives in Malmesbury, has most recently been playing for Conference North Gloucester City, for whom he recently made his 50th appearance, but agreed a Hardenhuish Park return after talks with Bluebirds' boss Mark Collier.

Griffin's goalscoring exploits for Town in the late 1990s eventually earned him a £10,000 move to Swindon Town, for whom he went on to make 28 appearances, scoring two goals.

He went on to play for a total of 14 clubs, including significant spells at Stevenage, whom he helped into the Football League, Woking, Forest Green Rovers, Newport County, Salisbury City and Bath City and League clubs Wycombe Wanderers.

Chippenham boss Mark Collier told the Gazette & Herald: "It's a really good signing for us because Charlie's goalscoring record stacks up with the best non-league strikers.

"He's been at Gloucester. They were releasing him at the end of the season but he's got a good relationship with manager Tim Harris there and he hadn't had much game-time recently so we sorted out a little deal.

"It's great news for the club. We've been short of goals this season, but Charlie has always scored goals wherever he has been and he looks after himself.

"We're expecting all the paperwork to go through and he'll be involved on Saturday. We've got 10 games to go (this season) and hopefully he will be a big part of them, with a view to being involved for us next season as well.''

Griffin's younger brother Alan left Chippenham earlier this season after struggling to recover from a knee operation.
