MICHAEL McNally hopes that his Shrivenham players savour the feeling of finally bringing their 17-match winless run to an end last weekend.

Steve Alford’s 25-yard strike saw Shrivvy claim a 1-0 victory over Hellenic League Division One West Tytherington Rocks in the second round of the Supplementary Cup, with the Barrington Park men tasting victory for the first time since their 2-0 league win as Ascot United on November 15.

And caretaker manager McNally was most pleased for the players that have stuck with the club through thick and predominately thin this term.

“I wasn’t really happy for me but for the players, really,” said McNally.

“I was really happy for the lads that have been here since pre-season. A lot of players have jumped ship but guys like Sam Packer, John Rees and Adam Corcoran have stayed with the club and they’re the ones you want here.

“We never really looked like we were going to lose the game. Steve Alford scored a great strike, we were in control for a lot of the game, and we got the job done.

“We also gave debuts to a few lads, like Jake and Joe Adams, who are 17 and 18.”

Shrivenham’s progress into the third round of the cup also means that McNally’s side won’t be left kicking their heels in March.

Shrivvy have played more league games than anyone else and the fixture list currently has them not in action again until April 6.

McNally said: “I’m sure we can do a few things. We’ll have a cup game now and maybe one of the league games will be brought back.

“We might also try and arrange a friendly – I’ve got a few contacts.”
