MARK Cooper fronted up after Swindon Town’s disappointing 3-0 defeat at the hands of Gillingham.

Cody McDonald scored twice to sandwich a Jake Hessenthaler header that saw Town sunk at home for the second time in three games.

Town were sloppy throughout and failed to muster a shot on target, Ben Gladwin’s shaking of the post late on the nearest the home side came.

Cooper was clearly frustrated by his side’s failure to meet the levels they have achieved so regularly this season, despite his efforts to tweak the tactics that saw Town end the game with just two defenders.

“It was one of those evenings where we had too many players under par,” the Town boss told the local media.

“No matter what you try, it was just not good enough. We tried to change it, we tried to freshen the strikers up, did what we could, but it was just a bad, bad evening.

“Gillingham started a real high tempo and pressed us, but we gradually came into the game and had some good chances, and when we seemed to be getting control of the game we concede the goal.

“We had opportunities to put the balls in the right areas and to score a goal ourselves but it doesn’t happen again.

“We had a bad start to the second half, conceded a really poor goal from our point of view, and it put us in a real bad position straight after half-time.”

The home fans were quick to show their ire at the performance from their men, boos at half time and on the final whistle met the players. Cooper would rather his charges did not have to deal with that sort of reaction but did say they need to grow mentally if they are to turn around their form.

“It is difficult when the pressure is on and the young players are (dealing with) a lot of negativity about, it’s difficult for us to recover,” he added.

“They have to roll their sleeves up and somewhere along the line they have to mature as players and people if they want to get where they want to get.”

The Swindon Advertiser were not permitted to attend the post-match press briefing.
