IT WAS a disappointing afternoon for Swindon Supermarine as they suffered back-to-back defeats after falling 2-1 to Larkhall.

Dave Webb’s side gave themselves an uphill battle as they handed the hosts, who are sitting fifth in the Southern League Division One South and West, a 2-0 lead within the first half an hour.

A strike from Luke Hopper gave Supermarine hope minutes before the break when he latched onto a ball from Scott Bevan before curling the ball past the Larkhall keeper.

However in a second half of few opportunities Supermarine were unable to muster an equaliser as they remain 15th in the league.

“We had some good opportunities early doors and missed them and they scored really with their first effort on goal,” said Webb.

“Then again it was fairly even and we conceded another goal and we are two behind and you are looking at the game thinking how are we two behind?

“We knew it was going to be difficult in the second half with the elements. The way the wind was coming down the pitch and the way that they play, they don’t let you rest on the ball.

“The pitch wasn’t really fit for passing football, it was more about putting the ball into areas with the conditions and we tried to do that in the second half and probably only had one real opportunity to equalise.

“It’s a game you analyse it the next day and it was low on quality from both sides but again we have just fallen short by one goal and from my perspective it is disappointing.

“They are fifth in the league, six points clear of the chasing pack in the play-offs spot, so we were by no means disgraced and probably a little unlucky not to take anything from the game.

“The score still reads 2-1 and it is a game I thought we should have taken something from.”

Webb took the chance to congratulate his old friend John Fisher for Highworth’s success in the FA Vase, after they beat Tadcaster 1-0 to book their two-legged semi-final against competition favourites North Shields.

“I just want to congratulate John Fisher and the boys at Highworth on their magnificent achievement,” added Webb.

“It is an unbelievable achievement for Highworth to go there and beat a team that has got all that quality and we’re probably expecting to walk all over Highworth.

“They showed their quality again and we wish them all the best in the semi-final.

“Over two legs who knows, the dream is still on and stranger things have happened.”
