SUPERMARINE boss Dave Webb rued the ‘gift’ that left his side pointless from a see-saw struggle at Bridgwater Town on Saturday.

Marine were seconds away from a hard-earned draw at Fairfax Park when goalkeeper Sam Warrell was deceived by the bumpy playing surface and the home side’s David O’Hare nipped in to snatch a 4-3 victory.

Marine had earlier battled back from 2-0 and 3-2 down and Webb conceded he was distraught to return to Wiltshire with nothing to show for his team’s efforts.

“I’m really disappointed to not come away with at least something,’’ he said. “We were always behind, but we got ourselves back into the game and then it was just a mistake from Sam (Warrell) which gifted them three points at the end.

“Sam has been really good for us. It was just a nothing ball through but the pitch was very bobbly and as he went to gather it, he fumbled it and their guy stuck it in the back of the net.

“When you are a goalkeeper, any mistakes tend to cost goals and it was just one of those times.’’ Marine’s on-loan Swindon Town striker, Connor Waldon, had an early header cleared off the line and then Bridgwater grabbed the lead when former Chippenham Town striker Tom Knighton crossed for Ross McNab to find the net.

Bridgwater doubled their lead in first-half injury time as McNab set up Kyle Tooze to scored with a chip, but Marine responded immediately as Chris Taylor fired home an excellent free kick.

Ryan Stanners should have levelled in the second half having been teed up by Waldon, before the young Town frontman himself restored parity by heading home from Ryan O’Hara’s corner.

McNab got Bridgwater back into the lead, but Taylor again provided the heroics from a set-piece, netting his second free kick to make it 3-3, before Marine’s late heartbreak.

Webb added: “In recent games we’ve come up short but I can never fault the players’ effort and to come away with nothing was tough.

“Luke Matthews (centre-half who joined on a short-term deal from Swindon Town in midweek) came in and he’s going to be a very good player and Kyle Lapham started his first game for five months and played 70 minutes so there were some positives.

“We’ve had a couple of defeats recently, so we just want to try and get back to winning.’’
