SWINDON Spitfires under 15s saw off Didcot Casuals 1-0 in the Berkshire League Cup semi-finals.

In a tie that would have been worthy of the final, the visitors imposed themselves on the home side straight from kick-off.

Spitfires struggled to break out of their own half in the first 30 minutes and only as the break neared did they cause Didcot problems.

In the second half, with both teams pushing for the win, the game became more open with end-to-end football. Danielle Jones, in the Spitfires goal, had to be on fine form to pull off a string of fine saves to keep her side in the tie.

Mid-half Ellie Scott broke through one-on-one with the Didcot keeper only for the pair to collide, causing the keeper to take a knock to the head, resulting in a lengthy injury stoppage.

Eight minutes from time Spitfires were awarded a free-kick on the edge of Didcot’s box. The Didcot keeper could only palm Scott’s kick into a crowded box and Natalie Goodright was the quickest to react to the loose ball and fired home from close range.

Spitfires faced a nervy end to the game as Didcot went all out attack, but the Spitfires defence remained defiant and were able to keep Didcot at bay.

Spitfires will now face Wokingham and Embrook in the final on May 9.

Swindon Spitfires under 13s earned a 1-1 draw with Kidlington Hawks.

In the first half and with the wind behind them, Kidlington drove forward, with Mia Thomson in particular causing Spitfires problems.

It was she who scored the only goal of the first half when she dribbled around two players before driving the ball into the net.

In the second half Spitfires forced Kidlington back and had many chances to equalise, finally getting one through Courtney Gleed.

Spurred on by their leveller, Spitfires had a number of opportunities to get a winner, but the rearguard of Kidlington and some fine goalkeeping prevented this.

Highworth under 12s did not make the most of their opportunities as they hosted Trowbridge in their final league match, losing 6-1. The home side dominated possession but couldn’t quite finish their chances. Phoebe Park scored five for Trowbridge, with Highworth’s goal coming from Millie Ersser. Highworth can reflect positively on their first season together. While games have been tough, heads have stayed up and there has been great improvement across the whole team.
