IT was a case of unlucky 13 for Royal Wootton Bassett when they headed to Aylesbury in Southern Counties North.

The Ballard’s Ash side travelled to Buckinghamshire on the back of 12 consecutive wins which had brought them slim hopes winning the title.

But following a 22-12 defeat against third-placed Aylesbury, Alan Low’s men must pick themselves up if they are to stay in contention for a potential promotion play-off.

And following Saturday’s performance, which saw Duncan Fulling kick four penalties for the visitors, Low was struggling to see any positives.

“When you put in a performance and still lose, you can understand that,” the Bassett director of rugby said. “But against Aylesbury we were disappointing.

“We got ourselves into good scoring opportunities but then we just kicked the ball away in their 22 and that is not like us.

“We struggled in so many areas and it is hard to put your finger on what went wrong.

“We have a number of issues that we have to look at in training this week and we have to now show a bit of character.”

Low felt that perhaps his players went into the game complacent and that is something that will have to change if they are to be plying their trade at a higher level next season.

“We had been on such a good run that maybe some complacency crept in,” Low said.

“If we are to go up then every game away from home is a big game.”
