GARVEY Kelly will look to get his career back on track when he appears on the undercard of Eamonn O’Kane’s IBF middleweight inter-continental defence in Northern Ireland, writes MICHAEL REEVES.

The Swindon welterweight suffered the first defeat of his fledgling professional career last month when he was stopped by Faheem Khan at the Oasis Leisure Centre.

And while Kelly will return to the scene of his loss on June 6 on his trainer Paddy Fitzpatrick’s ‘Talk is Cheap’ show, which will be headlined by rising cruiserweight star Luke Watkins, the first focus for the 27-year-old is a fight on May 2.

“Garvey is fine,” trainer Fitzpatrick said. “He understands that this is the business that we are in.

“He is lucky enough to have George (Groves) on the team and following his second loss to Carl (Froch) he went out in his next fight and won the European title.

“When we were back in the gym on the Monday (after the Khan loss) I didn’t want anyone there feeling sorry for him.

“If they did I told them to get out and come back with a different attitude.”

Kelly’s return at the Lavey Sports Arena in County Derry will also see stable-mate O’Kane in a potential world title eliminator in front of 2,000 fans, while Watkins is also being lined up for an Irish cruiserweight title.

On the Swindon show in June, Fitzpatrick will hand Sam Smith his professional debut.

“Sam will debut over six rounds,” the Ferndale Road-based trainer said. “His nickname is Sniper and as it suggests he works well at range, but he also has a beautiful jab.

“He had a big amateur following and I’m looking forward to seeing him make his debut.”

Tickets for the ‘Talk is Cheap’ show will go on sale next month and will be priced £35 standard and £60 VIP.
