IT WAS goals galore throughout the league as no fewer than 98 strikes found the net in the 14 fixtures that went ahead.

The most interesting game was in Division Two as Peter Myall grabbed a five-goal haul to help Wanborough edge a 7-6 thriller at AFC Moonrakers.

Mark Jones was also on target for Wanborough, whose lot was rounded off by an own goal.

The heavy wind that ripped through the region throughout the day was a big factor in the contest and boss Paul Carter admitted his side were somewhat fortunate to finish on top.

His side had been 6-4 in front before Moonrakers battled back to level the scores, only for the wind to help Wanborough snatch the points at the death.

“Both sides battled hard but the conditions were really difficult” said Carter. “The ball was moving from one side of the pitch to the other, even when it was on the deck.

“I’ve been involved in football a long time but I have never played in a game like that - it was bizarre.”

The win saw Wanborough climb above Moonrakers into fourth in the table and they are scheduled to finish their season away at league leaders Deers Leap this weekend.

Carter is confident his team have what it takes to inflict just a second league defeat on the table-toppers, but added that does not think teams should be expected to play on Easter Sunday.

He said: “In all honesty, I don’t think the game should be on. We’ve both got a free weekend the week after so why can’t we play then?

“The shops are only shut two or three days a year and one of those is Easter Sunday. If that’s the case, I don’t see why you should have to play a game of football.”

Elsewhere in the division, West Swindon Wanderers beat The Windmill 2-1 and KC Globe and Penhill United drew 2-2.

Rodbourne Real moved within four points of Division Three leaders AFC Tap & Barrel with a 3-2 success at Cross Street.

The only game in Division Four saw DPR move 10 points clear at the top with a 5-1 thrashing of second-placed Chiseldon.

Marlborough Casuals clinched the Division Five title despite being pushed all the way by Coleshill Youth as goals from Rob Harland, Max Derrick and Craig Simmons helped them triumph 3-2. AFC Freshbrook were 3-1 winners over Nationwide and Cricklade MTA beat Rug Shack 4-0.

Leaders FC Abbey Meads ran riot in Division Six, romping to an emphatic 20-1 success at bottom side Northern Lights. Cricklade Park Rangers and County Ground shared a 5-5 thriller, Willowgreen Hotspur beat Croft Junior 5-2 and goals from Taiwo Abolarin and Jonathan Peachey saw Swindon Athletic to a 2-1 win over Save on Tyres Athletic.

The Division One sides played games in the Maurice Ivory Cup and Greyhound thrashed FC Walcot 6-1, while New Century WMC claimed a 5-1 win over Inter Sandgate.
