SWINDON Spitfires United got the better of a hard-fought battle with Melksham to book their place in the Wiltshire League Cup Final thanks to a penalty shoot-out success.

Sandra Higgins-Hughes’ long ball allowed Mel Bristow to open the scoring for United.

Melksham upped the pressure after the break and scored twice in quick succession.

Bristow then equalised after a goalmouth scramble as the game headed into extra time.

Caroline Hook and Claire Morton both hit the post for Spits, while keeper Shona Hanlon made an excellent save to deny Melksham.

Penalties were needed to decide who would progress to the final to face either Marlborough Ladies or Spitfires Development.

Zofie Stepien, Bristow and Morton were on target as the score was tied at 3-3 after four penalties each but Rachel Eley then gave Spits the initiative and Hanlon pulled off a fine save to seal the win.

Aimee Prinzi and Chloe Neate both bagged a brace as Spits under 13s beat Tower Hill 6-0.

Prinzi opened the scoring inside 10 minutes and Spits’ second came shortly afterwards, with Jasmine Hindon’s corner headed in by Morgan Ly Culley.

A Hindon cross was converted by Emily Purvis to make it 3-0 and Neate then got her first at the far post.

Tower came out strongly after the break and had a chance to reduce the arrears with a penalty but that went wide.

Spits were soon back on top and Prinzi floated a free-kick into the top corner before Neate wrapped up the win.

Shannon Whiteley and Kayleigh Stanley struck as Spits under 12s reached the Cup final with a 2-0 defeat of Bath City.
