JOHN Swift made quite an impression on the locals at Plymouth Argyle’s Home Park, as he scored one and played a big role in the second as England Under 20s saw off the USA.

Swift has impressed many with close control and skill since joining Swindon Town on loan from Chelsea. On Sunday he impressed the Young Lions’ fans with those same talents, as well as providing a more tangible product.

Swift had scored the first penalty in the Under 20s' shoot-out win over Mexico last Wednesday and his confidence was clearly buoyed. He was at the heart of all things good about England and there was no surprise when he opened the scoring.

“It was my first goal for England,” he told the Plymouth Herald.

“I saw Moses (Odubajo) break down the right side and just had to make the box. Luckily it fell to me.

“He’s probably the quickest player in our team! He put a great ball in for my goal.

“You don’t really think about it. It just happens. When we celebrated, the lads were all saying congratulations.

“The USA are a good team but I think we went out and executed our game plan really well.

“They had a bit of a spell at the end but we defended really well and got the win.”

Aside from the goal there was a particular move where Swift dragged back sharply and went on a mazy run that beat a number of American opponents.

These things look natural to Swift and he confirmed as much when trying to describe it “You just do it in the moment and don’t even think about it,” explained Swift, whose move brought about plenty of appreciation from the stands.

“You hear the fans and it was a good game to play in,” he added. “There were quite a few there even in the warm-up, so we all knew then how big the game was.”
