SWINDON College Old Boys left it late as they look to end the season on a high, despite having little left to play for.

With Reading Abbey having clinched the league title the previous weekend and College sitting comfortably in second spot, it was only pride that was up for grabs.

It took until the last play of the game for Mark Lea’s side to shake off a dogged Abingdon side, who had third place to play for, as they completed a 25-20 home win.

Despite missing enough players to make up a starting XV, College were able to grind out the result as James Murray scored the winning try.

“The first team played against Abingdon, who were trying to secure third place in the league on Saturday, and won with virtually the last play of the game,” said Lea.

“We had more than 15 unavailable, so to come away with a win still was very pleasing and showed the strength in depth we now have.

“Several players had to play out of position, including James Murray who, as a flanker-turned-centre, managed to score the winning try.

“We now have two weeks off before our final game of the season against Chipping Norton.

“The second team were affected badly by the first team's unavailabilities, which made their last gasp win against Bath Saracens all the more satisfying.

“The experience of Alex Hill and Steve Packer really helped the young players, and I believe the club really is in a great place.”

Meanwhile, Supermarine are at risk of going the whole season without a win after they fell to a 55-5 home defeat to Midsomer Norton.
