ROSEMARY Nichols was the most successful competitor in the remaining events at the annual Westlecot Indoor Club Championship finals.

She contested three finals - mixed triples, mixed pairs and ladies pairs - and was victorious in all of them.

Nichols had earlier claimed the mixed triples title with Denis Holborow and Dave Matthews with a 22-13 victory but added two more in the second block of the championships.

The first was a comfortable 15-7 win in the ladies pairs with Jenny Vowles but she had to work extremely hard together with Denis Holborow to capture the mixed pairs on an extra end after trailing for much of the match.

The only other player to complete a double apart from Holborow was Westlecot stalwart Kevin Embling.

He combined with his usual indoor pairs partner Ian Jefferies to win the men’s pairs title with a 21-12 victory over Barry Pittuck and his son Tom.

Gary Jackson cruised to a very comfortable 21-3 success in the final of the New Open Singles over Terry Walton who finished as runner-up for the second successive season.

The one outstanding final, men’s triples, was scheduled to be completed by the end of this week.

Either Mike Titcombe or Ian Jefferies can also join Embling and Holborow on completing a double as they both won events in the first block and face each other in the men’s triples final.

Results - Mixed Triples: Denis Holborow, Dave Matthews & Rosemary Nichols beat Val Green, Gary Plant & Jim Green 22-13, Mixed Pairs: Sheila Kenny & Mike Bowden lost to Denis Holborow & Rosemary Nichols 19-20 (extra end), Ladies Pairs: Jenny Vowles & Rosemary Nichols beat Pat Waite & Val Coles 15-7 (only 14 ends retired), Men’s Pairs: Tom & Barry Pittuck lost to Kevin Embling & Ian Jefferies 12-21, Men’s Over 60 Pairs: Kevin Embling & Dave Snell (holders) beat John Thomas & Dave Matthews 30-19, New Open Singles: Terry Walton lost to Gary Jackson 3-21.

WESTLECOT had representation in two of the events in the final block of this season’s national championships last week at Melton & District.

But they missed-out on landing a third national title for the Old Town Indoor Club.

The quartet of Kevin Embling, Chris Cheesley, Ian Jefferies and Neil Smith (skip) won their opening last 16 fours championship match defeating Hartlepool 21-13 but went out in the quarter-finals losing 24-14 to Barking (Essex).

Meanwhile teenager Lucy Smith, 19, was unable to repeat her heroics and magnificent run she enjoyed last year when reaching the semi-finals in the ladies singles championship.

Smith pushed Penny Strong (Lincoln & District) all the way in her last 16 match and was only beaten on a deciding last end.
