SWINDON swimmer Jazz Carlin has been working on the finer details ahead of the World Championships this weekend.

Carlin heads to Kazan, Russia, in fine form, having bagged herself three gold medals at the British Championships in May, before following that up with four more golds at the Mare Nostrum Series.

However, the 24-year-old will be taking nothing for granted, having experienced heartache two years ago as she missed out on bronze in the 400m freestyle final by just 0.14 seconds in Barcelona, before failing to make it out of the heats in both the 800m and the 1,500m.

The Tigersharks swimmer has put that disappointment behind her as she prepares for the 400m and 800m, and knows that securing a medal could come down to fine margins.

“I have been working on smaller things like my technique and my strength,” she told the Adver.

“Outside of the pool I have been trying to make myself a bit stronger because I know that has been a bit of a weakness of mine in the past.

“Compared to a lot of the other girls I am quite small and not as strong, so it is definitely something I have been working on.”

One area in particular that Carlin has been working on in the pool is her turns, and her move to the National Centre at Bath University has helped her to hone in on that part of her technique.

“On my turns I have been doing a lot of filming,” she added.

“I know with the new Bath centre there are lots of underwater cameras and lots of filming, so we will definitely be focusing a lot more on the technical stuff.

“For me, I am just used to swimming up and down and I have not always had the best turns but I think you have to find the small advantages in your swimming.

“Whether it is finding a little bit on a turn or a start I think you need to find that because it could be the difference between a medal and not getting a medal.”

Carlin has been used to leading from the front in her recent competitions, something that is foreign to her.

“It is something that I have been working on quite a bit,” she added.

“It is a bit strange, I am sort of a chaser and normally I am not out first and I am not the fastest out so it is quite different.

“You have to push yourself and force it a little bit out so it makes the race a little bit different.

“It is about getting used to that now and at the World Championships I know there will be loads of girls who will be pushing out and I will have lots of girls to chase then.”

Carlin goes in the 400m freestyle heats on Sunday, before taking part in the 800m freestyle on Friday.
