SWINDON Supermarine boss Dave Webb was impressed with the way his side responded to going a goal down early on to book their place in the next round of the FA Cup with a 4-2 win at Sholing.

After a disrupted journey to Hampshire on Friday evening, which left Webb’s side arriving later than planned for the preliminary round tie, Sholing within eight minutes through a Dan Mason strike.

However the visitors responded immediately through a Chris Taylor free-kick, before Jacob Davidge netted twice, either side of Ash Edenborough’s strike with practically his first touch from coming off the bench on his debut.

A second goal for Mason was not enough to get the hosts back in the game and Webb was pleased with his side’s character as they booked a first round qualifying tie against Winchester City – 5-1 conquerors of Wincanton Town – on Saturday week.

“It was a difficult one because being Bank Holiday we didn’t have the best of journeys down there and arrived a little bit later than we planned,” he said.

“Although we started the game well, we conceded a poor goal on eight minutes and Dan Mason caused us a few problems all evening.

“The reaction of the team was great and we just kept playing and passing the ball well and got a deserved equaliser.

“We dominated the game and created lots of chances and took the lead through Jacob Davidge, who had a very good game on the left-hand side of the front three.

“I’ve asked to get quite a lot players contributing in terms of goals, we never really had that last season.

“With the way we are playing now, with a lot of offensive players on the pitch, I am looking for more to chip in and score and that is starting to happen.

“The pleasing thing is that we won the game, scored four goals and played some terrific football.

“Anybody who came and watched the team must have been impressed with the way that we played.

“We have just got to keep doing that.”

Supermarine now turn their attentions back to the league and a home clash with Wantage Town this afternoon.

Webb is hoping for an improved performance on the last time they played at the Webb’s Wood stadium, when they lost 2-1 to Bishop’s Cleeve.

“The last time we were at home in the league we didn’t perform to the same level and we got beat,” added Webb.

“They (Wantage) are scoring goals as well.

“Most teams have improved and the league is very competitive, but we are in a very good position and we need to make sure on Monday we don’t make any more mistakes.

“We want to make the Webb’s Wood a difficult place to come and win.”
