FORMER Swindon Town chief scout Ken Ryder believes the way that Swindon are going about their recruitment is the way other clubs in the division should be doing it.

With the transfer window set to shut this evening at 6pm, Ryder, who these days is head of recruitment at Sheffield Wednesday, has done the majority of his work for the summer and is already looking forward to the next window.

Ryder spent five years with Town where he was responsible for bringing in the likes of Charlie Austin and Simon Cox.

Having seen Swindon go through financial problems in the past, Ryder now believes what chairman Lee Power is doing in the transfer window, by trying to find rough diamonds in the lower leagues and polishing them up, is the best thing to do economically.

“I think that Swindon have gone full circle,” he told the Adver.

“They have gone through some tough times and come back and levelled out on a financial footing.

“They are probably being run the way a League One club should be run.

“I think the likes of Ben Gladwin, from Marlow, who went to QPR, that is what clubs in that division are looking for.

“Fleetwood are another example of a club trying to find the golden nugget and nurture them, even though they have a rich chairman in Andy Pilley.

“He is looking at it that way as well, because I don’t think these owners can keep pumping money in.

“You have to work the system to find the right players and do what they have done with the two they have sold to QPR.

“It is a way of survival at that level really.”
