MICHAEL Smith has become the third forward to leave Swindon Town on transfer deadline day after the club confirmed he has joined Barnsley on loan until January.

Smith has been linked with a move away from the County Ground throughout the summer and he will now join up with one of Town's League One rivals.

The 23-year-old's exit follows the departure of Nathan Byrne to Wolves and Miles Storey's loan switch to Inverness Caledonian Thistle earlier today.

Smith joined Town for an initial £100,000 from Charlton Athletic in January 2014 and went on to score eight goals in 20 appearances for the club that season.

The Geordie striker was a key figure for Mark Cooper's side last term as they reached the League One play-off final, netting 18 goals in all competitions.

Barnsley head coach Lee Johnson said: "I'm really pleased to get this one over the line. Michael will not only bring a great presence to our forward line but he also adds goals, too.

"He has all the attributes to complement what we already have here. I have tracked Michael through the window and I am pleased to have secured his services on loan initially. I'm looking forward to working with him."
