SWINDON Town this afternoon confirmed the return of striker Nicky Ajose to the County Ground.

Ajose's comeback to Wiltshire was confirmed after the striker had his contract terminated at Leeds United, the frontman signing a three-year deal with Town

The news came shortly after Leeds United had confirmed that Ajose was a free agent, paving the way for his return to Town.

Ajose, 23, departed Elland Road after having his contract terminated by mutual consent.

The frontman was signed by Leeds from Peterborough United, but made just four appearances during his time in Yorkshire and spent the majority of last season out on loan with Crewe Alexandra.

A Leeds United statement said: "We would like to wish Nicky well for the future and thank him for his efforts during his time here.''

Ajose has been at the centre of much speculation this summer after being judged surplus to requirements by Elland Road boss Uwe Rosler, with many Town fans clamouring for his return.

Such a comeback initially looked unlikely with Leeds supposedly favouring a permanent deal that covered the cost of paying up the final two years of his contract, while Town boss Mark Cooper also distanced the club from the striker, with League One rivals Coventry City also interested.

However, Leeds' decision to release him set up the possibility of him joining Town outside of the transfer window, which shut at 6pm yesterday.

Town were also hoping to tie up a deal for Estonian international attacking midfielder Henrik Ojamaa, a free agent after leaving Legia Warsaw, today.

Birmingham striker Wes Thomas joined on loan until January before the window shut yesterday and triallist Jeremy Balmy signed, while Nathan Byrne was bought by Championship side Wolves and Miles Storey and Michael Smith went on loan to Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Barnsley respectively.
