WESTLECOT returned to the winners' enclosure in team events after a recent poor run as the men’s sides collected a fine winning double in the space of 24 hours last weekend.

The Old Town club thumped Gloucester 96-54 in a first round Denny Plate tie and followed that up on Sunday morning with an 89-77 victory over Loddon Vale (Basingstoke) in a Wessex League east section group game.

Westlecot led throughout against Gloucester in the Denny Plate despite a quiet start only leading across the board at five ends 21-18 but by ten were 50-28 clear, moved 78-42 up at 15 and finally won by 42 shots.

They took the honours on three of the four rinks with Dave Godwin leading his foursome at home at Westlecot to the biggest win of 37-10.

In the second round scheduled for next Saturday, November 28 (10am), Westlecot have been paired against Oxfordshire side Carterton.

The men produced a superb display to beat Loddon Vale (Basingstoke) in their third Wessex clash.

The hard-fought 89-77 victory over Vale, who won the east section two years ago and were runners-up last season, moved Westlecot up to top spot in the east region table, albeit on shots difference over Carterton (61 shots to 31).

The Old Town Club shared the rink honours 2-2 but still collected 12 of the 16 points on offer as they won on shots 89-77.

The 31-13 victory by Ian Jefferies quartet at Westlecot and the 27-15 win away by Dave Godwin’s foursome proved to be decisive.

The match was tight across the board early on with Westlecot down 17-16 at five ends but leading 45-37 at ten. They pulled 11 shots clear to move 66-55 up at 15 ends and were 78-68 ahead at 18 before finally capping a fine day by winning 89-77.

Westlecot’s next group match in the east section is next Sunday, November 29, when they face local rivals Swindon Manor - two rinks at home in Old Town and two away in Rodbourne.

SWINDON MANOR ladies were the only side from the Rodbourne Cheney Industrial Estate club to enter a national team event this season, opting to compete in the Yetton Trophy, national inter-club team championship.

But despite sharing the rink honours 2-2 - one win at home and one win away - Manor ladies lost 92-78 four weeks ago in their first round match to local rivals Westlecot.

They have a second chance of success in a national team competition as they have been automatically entered in the consolation Yetton Plate tournament.

They were due to face another local derby today (Saturday) starting at 10am as they had been paired in the Yetton Plate second round with Fairford, however, the Gloucestershire have conceded as they cannot raise a team.

Manor are awarded a walkover into round three where they will face the winners of the all-Midlands tie today between Avon Valley (Warks) or Tamworth (Staffs) on Saturday, January 16 next year.
