SWINDON Town caretaker manager Luke Williams was full of praise for his strike duo of Nicky Ajose and Jonathan Obika after the pair netted twice each to secure a 4-2 win over Southend United.

Since Swindon’s heavy 5-1 defeat on the road at Fleetwood Town the double act have been the the chosen pair to lead Town’s line and they are starting to thrive as a result.

In those seven games they have scored 10 goals between them, five apiece, and have now amassed 20 goals in all competitions for the Robins.

Obika is four goals behind his strike partner in the race to be Town’s top scorer and Williams knows, from what he has seen on the training ground, that there is more to come from the 25-year-old if he remains fit.

“I think Jon is a fantastic player,” Williams told the local press.

“I still don’t think you’ve seen the best of him.

“We’ve seen it. The staff are fortunate, we see it a lot in training and I think that Jon will benefit a lot from a run of games in the side.

“I struggle to find something that he hasn’t got that could take him to the top level.

“Look at the two goals. Jon scores one delicate finish with the outside of his foot, perfectly timed spinning away into the corner, then the second one is like the Didier Drogba where everyone is bouncing off him, skill and the calmness of the finish.”

Meanwhile, Ajose continued his fine shots to goal ratio on Saturday as he popped up at the right time to score Swindon’s opener before claiming Swindon’s 5,700th league goal in the dying minutes.

“Nicky was here before and he is a goal machine,” added Williams.

“He is so driven by goals that he is constantly looking for an opportunity where he can pick someone’s pocket, like he did tonight, or poach one from inside the box.

“You’ve seen everything about Nicky’s game so they are quite a partnership I think.”
