SWINDON Wildcats player-coach Aaron Nell has called on his players to stick to their own game after claiming a scrappy 7-4 win over Bracknell Bees tonight.

A hat-trick from the 26-year-old added to a brace from Jonas Höög and strikes from Corey McEwen and Carlo Finucci as three goals in the final four minutes of the game added gloss to the scoreline.

Swindon, who took a two-goal lead in the first period, got caught up in a physical battle in the second period, which saw Matt Selby fight James Gallazi and Sam Bullas receive a 10 minute penalty for a check from behind.

However, Swindon were able to show their class by the time the final buzzer sounded and claim an important win over the English Premier League’s basement side to secure a four-point weekend.

“It wasn’t as pretty as we might have liked but it was a must-win game,” said Nell.

“They worked extremely hard and we weren’t very smart in the second period but we buckled down in the third period and probably deserved to win.

“When we move the puck well and support each other we are a very good team, and we did that in the first period and the third.

“In the second period we just got away from that and we got caught up in a bit of rubbish that we didn’t really need to get involved with.

“We don’t need to show how tough we are, we need to play as a team and then our abilities come through and that is where we won the game.

“They are a very physical team and that is how they play and we have got to be prepared for that.

“We kind of got sucked into that and tried to play their game a bit too much.

“We have got to play hard and have got to stick up for ourselves but we have also got to keep on playing our game.

“Our game is speed and good, solid D and attacking when we get the chance, and we got away from that.

“In the third they still came back again to make it 4-4 and they work hard. We battened down and got a big win.”

Selby missed the remainder of the game after hitting the ice with his face at the end of the fight with Gallazi and Nell said they will assess the extent of the injury on Monday.

“It is a precaution right now,” added Nell.

“You never want to rush someone back after what happened.

“We hope he is fine because Selby has been great for us this year and has really picked up as the year has gone on.”
