TAWNY Owl made it a perfect 10 at the top of the District League Premier Division table when they saw off third-placed Shield & Dagger 5-2 on Saturday.

Ajay Sahota’s men recovered from going an early goal down at Moredon Rec to maintain their 100 per cent record in the league.

Dave Slattery bagged a brace for Tawny Owl, while his brother Paddy also got on the scoresheet and there was a goal apiece for Jamie Sheppard and Kenny Hawkins.

“In the end it was quite a comfortable win. The only thing that worried us was that we only had the bare 11,” said manager Sahota “We have got quite a decent sized squad but we had one suspension and a few illnesses and injuries. That was quite bad considering we were playing one of our main title challengers but I think that was just a one off.

“It was just one thing after another this week. We’ve got a good squad and as long as we get 11 players on the pitch, I’m confident we can beat anyone.

“We even had one player – Jack Allan – get injured after about 15 minutes but he hobbled on and played the full 90 minutes, so fair play to him.”

Just two games went ahead throughout the league, with the only other one coming in Division One, which also saw the leaders triumph as Swindon Spitfires shot down their hosts Sport 4 Pinehurst 8-1.

Mike Cox and Nolan Paul both bagged braces for the Spits, player/manager Barry Winslow, Sean Light and Phil Legace were also on target, with the visitors’ lot completed by an own goal.

Winslow said: “I was a bit surprised really as the last time we played them was in the cup and they ran us really close, I think we won 5-4. I was expecting another tight game.

“It was an excellent performance, especially considering we hadn’t played a game in about six weeks. It didn’t really look like we had been away.

“It’s nice to put that little bit more pressure on the other teams. We’ve got nine points on Swindon Centurions so they will think they need to go out and win every game from now on.”

n WILTSHIRE League leaders Trowbridge Town failed to win for just the second time this season as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Wroughton.

Despite missing out on the three points, Trowbridge still extended their lead at the top of the table as second-placed Shrewton United went down 4-2 at Malmesbury Victoria, who made the most of their first run-out of 2016.

That result also benefitted third-in-the-table Melksham Town Reserves as they moved within a point of Shrewton after beating Trowbridge Wanderers 2-1.

Vale of Pewsey put some more distance between themselves and the bottom two with a hard-fought 3-2 win away at Devizes Town Reserves, while it was an afternoon to forget for Chippenham Park Development as they were thrashed 4-0 at Ludgershall Sports.

n THERE were just two matches played throughout the Swindon Sunday League’s five divisions this weekend, both of which came in Division Two.

G Power Solutions climbed into the top three in the table with a dominant 6-0 rout of visiting side Rodbourne Real, while Cleeve Tech were 5-2 winners at home to Wanborough.

Division One side Penhill United did not have a league game but earned a place in the semi-finals of the Wiltshire Sunday Cup with a 3-1 victory at Purton Red House, of Division Five, in the last eight.
