PLAYER-coach Aaron Nell has been leading from the front during the Swindon Wildcats’ perfect fortnight in the English Premier League.

Forward Nell bagged a brace on each night against Sheffield Steeldogs and Bracknell Bees as the Cats secured a second straight four-point weekend.

Nell also chipped in with five goals the previous weekend to help his team keep hot on the heels of the top four teams in the table.

Nell has Jonas Hoog to thank for a large chunk of his goals as he has provided a hefty haul of assists, while the Swedish import has also been hitting the back of the net with ease himself during the Cats’ winning run.

“We fit together well, I forget how many years we have played together now but we know each other well,” said Hoog. “Aaron is scoring more, and I am scoring too. We are playing very well right now and hopefully we can continue.

“He had to change a little bit because he is the coach now but I think he has done a really good job after stepping in after half the season.

“I think his senses take over when he gets on the ice and he’s been playing good as both the coach and the player. He works very well for me and the team, so it’s looking good at the moment.

“He doesn’t make me pass to him any more now than normal, I just pass to him when he needs the puck.”

The Cats’ superb run of recent form comes after an indifferent post-Christmas period, with Nell’s side unbeatable at home but losing three in a row on the road.

Having seemingly clicked back into top gear again, Hoog is hopeful of a strong final two months of the season to secure a high seeding for the play-offs at the end of March.

“We are working very well right now and I think the whole team is good. I am feeling a little bit more like we’re getting to our best,” added Hoog. “We have two more months to get to the play-offs so we have got to keep that up.

“We had a little bit of a rough patch over Christmas where we lost three games but after that we have played very well.”
