WALCOT’S Said Eltuyev has been crowned the Western Counties Youth champion at the weekend after a gritty points’ win at the western area final in Newquay.

Daryl Dunne, from the Arena gym in Bournemouth, provided stiff opposition in their 64kgs contest, which consisted of three three-minute rounds at the weekend.

The Dorset boxer brought an impressive record of 10 wins from 12 contests to the ring, and he started in a confident manner, landing with solid hooks and straight rights.

Although Eltuvev enjoyed occasional success with his counters, the first round belonged to Dunne.

However, the Walcot boxer raised his game during the middle session, scoring with fast left jabs and straight rights to take the round and the final three minutes saw the former England Schoolboy international score at close range with heavy body shots fired from all angles.

Eltuyev also ensured his nimble footwork made him an elusive target during this session, and he was rewarded at the final bell with a split points’ decision.

“That was a tough bout – Daryl came to fight and was a worthy opponent for a final,” Eltuyev said. “I now have to get back in the gym to train hard for the next round.”

Walcot coach Lionel McCrea added: “Dunne started well and Said had to increase his work-rate after the first round, which he did. He followed my instructions perfectly.

“We can celebrate the win and then the hard work starts again this week in preparation for the national quarter-finals in two weeks’ time.”

Cirencester’s Jimmy McDonagh stormed his way through to the Youth National Championships after having to box twice in the Northern Division Youth championships.

McDonagh’s first opponent was Ethan Liffe, from Watchett ABC, but the Ciren boxer stopped his opponent 10 seconds in the second round. The following week McDonagh took a unanimous points decision over Paddy John’s Sam Elvins in the Northern Division final.

In the Western Counties Youth final in Newquay, McDonagh stopped Devonport ABC’s Brandon Staycey to progress to the national quarter-finals in Rotherham.

Cirencester also had two of their talented boxers in Bristol on Saturday at a show hosted by Barton Hill ABC.

John Varey won a unanimous points decision against Mitchel Turner from Golden Ring ABC, while Jordan Wall lost a split decision against Connor Daly, from Harrow and District ABC.
