ALAN Low says there is no sense that Royal Wootton Bassett are heading into the home straight of their season as they return to action on Saturday.

Bassett are sitting pretty at the top of the Southern Counties South table as teams prepare for the final third of their fixture list after a weekend off.

Although Low’s men have won 13 of their opening 15 league games and have a seven-point cushion at the summit, second-placed Midsomer Norton still have a game in hand.

As his side get set to face Dorset Dockers at home, Low is adamant that no one at Ballards Ash is getting ahead of themselves.

“The job’s not done until we run over the line,” said Low, whose team won 29-7 in the away fixture against Dockers back in November.

“It’s about keeping the humility in the players. As soon as we take our eyes off the job and look behind us, that’s when we will slip up.

“I’m not looking at the end of April yet. We just have to focus on the job at hand.

“It was a re-arranged game down at their place, so you don’t know if that meant they were affected by unavailabilites.

“Although the scoreboard says one thing and it looks a comfortable win, it was a tough day at the office.

“We don’t take anyone lightly. We’ve seen Marlborough beat Midsomer Norton, then Devizes beat Marlborough after Frome had beat Devizes. Anyone in this league can beat anyone and it’s a credit to the league how competitive it is, right the way down.”

Bassett had won 10 on the bounce before their break and Low hopes that the rest will ensure they can keep up that excellent run.

“It was nice to have a bit of a break. I’m not going to say it was exactly a timely one but we had a consistent run of games in January,” added Low.

“We are into a maintenance part of the season now so it was a chance to rest a few bodies and have a light week in training.

“We got the guys into the gym to do a bit of work - we’re lucky to have that facility that other teams don’t - and then we will go back out on the grass for a run through before the game.”
