SWINDON Spitifires are closing in on the Swindon & District League Division One title after cracking home 15 goals to romp to their 15th victory of the season.

The Spits moved four points clear at the top of the table, taking full advantage of second-placed Swindon Centurians being held to a 2-2 draw by Moredon, by notching 12 goals in the space of 45 minutes to thrash North Swindon WMC 15-3 in South Marston.

Mike Cox led the way with five goals, Piotr Kusztykiewicz, Stephen Hughes and Nolan Paul all netted braces and Sean Light also got himself on the scoresheet before goalkeeper Jason Knight was allowed the opportunity to fire home from the penalty spot.

Barry Winslow’s side have two matches this week before they take on unbeaten rivals Centurians next Saturday but victory over Core Construction tonight would see the Spits get their hands on the Division One crown.

“It would be amazing to do it after all of the effort that goes in, all of phone calls and all of the work to organise training,” said manager Winslow.

“I’ve got three kids and I also help out with my eldest’s team, so a lot of time goes into this, but it would be great to come away with a winner’s medal – I got a runner-up one (in 2013-14) but it would be great to be a winner.

“I’m targeting maximum points and it would be nice to win the league and then try to get rid of Centurians’ unbeaten run.

“We’ve struggled a bit with how the pitches have been, so a few of the lads were complaining that they felt leggy on Saturday – it was 3-3 at half-time. But our fitness just showed in the second half and we took them apart.”

Elsewhere, James Lovell scored four times, whilst Tom Davis hit a hat-trick as Chiseldon thumped R&D United 9-1, with Arron Smith and Luke Mitchell also on target for the visitors whilst Terry Cook got R&D’s consolation effort.

Bassett Bulldogs bested Sport 4 Pinehurst 6-4.

Premier Division champions Tawny Owl maintained their unbeaten campaign with a 6-1 win over Shield & Dagger, whilst Spectrum beat Old Town United 6-2, with Aaron Northcott hitting a hat-trick and Phillip Ryan, Andrew Huggins and Chris Wood all notching.
