THE SWINDON & District League Premier Division’s top two lock horns tomorrow for the right to lift the Swindon Advertiser Cup.

Champions Tawny Owl, who have won every game they have played this season, and runners-up Avtar Construction, who are the current holders of the trophy, meet at Royal Wootton Bassett Town’s Gerrard Buxton Sports Ground on Saturday (kick-off 2pm).

For the unbeaten Tawny, senior player Ajay Sahota says that they will be looking to maintain their glistening recent history whilst also savouring a day out with their nearest and dearest in the stands.

“We’ve been playing for a few years and we’re all at that age where we’ve all got kids and things like that, so we’re a very family-orientated club,” said Sahota.

“I think that everybody’s hoping to bring their families along to have a good day.

“We don’t really have a manager but there are a few of us, like Dave Slattery, who does the team-talks, that run things but none of it would happen without our secretary Deb Howse.

“With the level we’re playing at, we’d expect to do well. We took a year out last year and for a few years before that, we were called Fratellos.

“We haven’t lost this year and the last time we lost a game was in 2012 (a 2-0 loss to Queensfield United in the final of the 2012 Advertiser Cup).

“You could say that we’re the favourites but Avtar are a good team – we might have a deeper squad but I’m sure they’ll be able to get a good 11 together.”

Avtar did the double last term, winning the Premier Division title and beating Lower Stratton 2-1 to get their hands on the Advertiser Cup.

Manager Peter Smith is expecting his matchday squad may be somewhat depleted but believes that Avtar will be able to give their opponents a run for their money.

He said: “We’ve been winning games in the second half of the year but we have been struggling with players being injured and ineligible.

“We might only have 12 or 13 players, so they’ll be the favourites.

“But the last time we played them (on April 9), we only had 11 and only lost 4-3 to them when they had their strongest side out.

“We’ve got Blaine Fitzgerald and Lewis Waldon up front, and they’re both lightning quick, so with those two, we’ve always got a chance.

“We’re 100 per cent looking forward to it.”

Tawny and Avtar’s showdown will take place a few hours after the fate of the George Thomas/ Don Rogers Cup is decided.

Division One outfit Bassett Bulldogs take on the Premier Division’s DJC Marlborough (kick-off 11am), also at Wootton Bassett.
