CIRENCESTER ABC’s Lewis Varey has stormed his way through to the semi-finals of the National Schoolboy Championships.

Competing in the 44-46kg weight category, Varey recorded a spectacular win over Oliver Bolton, from Canvey ABC, in Ipswich.

Varey took the fight to Bolton in the first round, catching him as he stepped in and out with combination punches.

This was the pattern throughout all three rounds and Varey was eventually awarded the win on a unanimous points decision.

ABA coach Simon Knowles said: “Lewis has got a good opponent, Aaron Smith, from Pinewood Star, at the weekend. Both boys have got good records and it promises to be a hard bout.

“What a season the club is having.”

Unfortunately, there was disappointment for his cousin and teammate Johnny Varey after he lost on a points decision.

Cirencester also travelled to Wales to a show hosted by Merlin Bridge last Friday night where Thomas Varey clinched a unanimous points decision over the experienced Ryan Christopher, from Pembroke ABC.

Varey dominated all three rounds in what was another all-action bout, catching his opponent with straight punches and sending Christopher’s head back.

Team mate Billy Harris stormed his way to a unanimous points decision against the more experienced Adam Lawrence, from Cardigan ABC.

Harris landed a string of straight left and right-hand punches and boxed well behind a tight guard to take the win.
