SAM Smith has ramped on the heat on light-heavyweight rival Kelvin Young by claiming he ‘has nothing left’ ahead of a potential autumn showdown.

The Paddy Fitzpatrick-trained prospect, who claimed the first stoppage win of his three fight career on Saturday night, is gunning for a contest with Swindon fan-favourite Young, who saw his bid to become a two-weight Southern Area champion finish in defeat.

After Smith stopped Hungarian David Sipos in the final round of his four-round bout, the Sniper, who jumped to 23rd in the BoxRec.com UK light-heavyweight rankings, remained at the York Hall to see Young face Jack Morris.

The Penhill pugilist, who is now ranked 19th, put on his best performance in two years but that was not enough as Morris left Young on all fours early in the 10th before biding his time to unleash another flurry of shots that appeared to leaving the 29-year-old unsteady on his feet as referee Ian John Lewis stopped the bout.

While Young and his team are calling for a rematch with the Margate fighter, who’s manager Mark Burford told the Advertiser they are not interested in, three-fight novice Smith is confident of defeating the former IBO inter-continental champion who has won 18 of his 26 contests.

“I watched the fight and Kelvin boxed well and I had him up,” Smith told the Advertiser.

“But I don’t rate Kelvin, I respect him, like I do any fighter, but I have more heart and I have known from day one that I could beat him.

“I don’t think he has anything left, he has got a top 20 ranking and that is something I’m after.

“People may think that I’m calling him out, but I was asked a question in an interview a while back about my thoughts of Kelvin and I gave an honest answer.”

Young’s trainer Liam Wilkins says that he would be happy for the former Southern Area super-middleweight champion to face the former England amateur if the fight was made.

“Kelvin was buzzing on Saturday night, he feels more like a winner than a loser,” Wilkins said. “He has gone away with his family this week and he will be back in the gym next week and I’ll keep him ticking over until we get a date from his manager Keith Mayo.

“If that is to be Sam Smith, I’d be happy with that.

“But after Kelvin’s performance on Saturday, that was the best I have seen him perform for a long time, I’d be happy for him to mix it with anyone in the top 10 in the country.”
