SWINDON skipper Andy Staff believes his club's first team are starting to reap the benefits of a strong pool of talent at the County Ground.

Staff’s men have won three of their last four matches and will have high hopes of continuing that positive run when they go to struggling Great Bedwyn in the WEPL Wiltshire tomorrow.

Swindon’s batting came to the fore last weekend as Devizes were consummately dismissed by 199 runs and Staff reckons the array of ability available for selection is bearing fruit.

“In our league, a lot of sides are depending on two or three stronger players, whereas we’ve realistically got probably 16, 17 or 18 players all of similar ability.

“At a time of year when there are holidays and one or two other bits, if you know you have got decent players in the twos to come in, or if people aren’t getting runs in the ones, they can drop back down and you have got people with the same ability to come in and replace them, it makes life easy.

“It relieves some of the pressure on the blokes not getting the runs and the wickets, but it means that those people in the twos are pushing to make things competitive as well, which is good.

“If you look at our selection over the season, a number of players have come up. We’ve tried to give them a few games as well.

“Four of our team (last weekend) started in the twos, but they’ve come up and done a good job and therefore, they deserve their spot.’’

Bedwyn are hovering just above the drop zone and while the top echelons of the table may now be beyond Swindon this season, Staff still senses the opportunity to make an impact.

“They were 4-4 when it was rained off (in the earlier match this season), so hopefully, we can replicate that,’’ he added.

“They’ve got good players, a couple of strong batters, so we’ll just look to take on the momentum (from the Devizes win).

“We should be confident and it’s a game we should be looking to win.”
