FREDDIE Martin hopes Lechlade will use the lessons from last week’s shock defeat to bottom side Thornbury to their advantage as they travel to the next side up in Premier Two Glos/Wilts, Burbage & Easton Royal, tomorrow.

Martin’s men slumped to a shock eight-wicket loss at the basement boys last week – only their third in 11 league matches this summer as Goatacre took over at the top of the standings.

By Martin’s own admission, Lechlade were “outplayed’’ in Gloucestershire, but is confident his side have the tools at their disposal to ensure lightning does not strike twice against another struggler tomorrow.

“It was the first time this season our batting has struggled (against Thornbury),’’ he said.

“We can take that on board and win this weekend.

“We can take a few things out of it (the defeat), that guys might need to stick around slightly longer when we’re in those situations, but it was the first time we haven’t scored a decent total.

“Hopefully we can put it behind us this Saturday and get back to winning again.’’ The surprise loss didn’t leave a huge dent in Lechlade’s title ambitions, as they lie just three points behind Goatacre, but it was a salutary reminder of the dangers that lurk throughout the division.

“Thornbury were bottom of the table going into last Saturday and, this season, everybody has been beating everybody, so you really can’t take any game lightly,’’ he added.

“We know Burbage have got a couple of stars so by no means will it be an easy game.

“If we bowl well, bat well and field well, our side is strong enough to beat most in the league, so if we can do the things we can control well, I’m sure we won’t be far away.

“There’s a good atmosphere in the camp and everyone is loving it.’’
