ROHAN Tungate feels at the top of his game right now and the Swindon Robins man has his fingers crossed that he can maintain his impressive form for as long as possible.

Tungate has been racking up a host of fine scores for both the Robins and Premier League outfit Somerset Rebels in recent weeks and on Monday night, the 26-year-old took centre stage as his superb 13-point haul helped Alun Rossiter’s side beat reigning champions Poole Pirates 50-42.

Four race wins and a third-placed heat 15 finish made up Tungate’s total and the Australian echoed his team manager’s post-race sentiments that he is finally fully attuned to the Abbey Stadium track.

“At the start of the season, I think the track wasn’t familiar for me and it was a bit of an enemy,” said Tungate, who also rides alongside Robins team-mates Josh Grajczonek and Charles Wright at Somerset.

“I’ve got to grips with it now and I’m confident coming here. We’ve got one more fixture left and then the play-offs, I think, so hopefully we can be stronger and stronger every time.

“The pressure was on and we knew we had to get the win, so we all put in a good effort – not just us but the management, track staff and everyone made sure the track was good and we were all ready for it.

“So thanks to everyone that helped us do what we did.

“I didn’t just beat second strings; I beat some good riders. I fought hard the whole time and I was hungry for the win.

“Rosco put the pressure on us – he did a good job as well – and well done to him. The whole team fought hard the whole way and got the job done.

“When you’ve got good tracks and good management, it makes a big difference and when you’re always riding, it’s one of the most important things and that’s what I’m doing.

“Even riding with Somerset; we’re getting victories there and it makes you more hungry to win and do well for the club, so I think we can do even better.”

The Robins’ victory over Poole moved them level on points with their second-placed rivals and further boosted their chances of securing a spot in the Elite League play-offs.

Rossiter’s men are next in action when they travel to Wolverhampton Wolves on Monday, August 29.

That fixture will be a part of a double-header for the Wolves, who are scheduled to host King’s Lynn Stars at Monmore Green at 6.30pm and then the Robins immediately afterwards.
